Toxic pollution is caused by harmful substances such as other chemicals. This type of pollution is most often linked to point source pollution. Point-source examples include industrial discharges, oil spills or underground gasoline tank leaks. However, it can also come from non-point sources, like runoff from neighborhoods, farms and cities. It may even be carried through the air through fumes from car exhaust or smokes from factory smoke stacks. Cleaners, dyes, paints and solvents such as turpentine are considered to be toxic substances. Several car chemicals, including antifreeze, also fall into the toxic pollution category.
